Pure Madness!

I’ve been attacked by a virus! For a few minutes this morning my computer screen was completely filled with pop-ups slightly resembling the intro to the movie Office Space’s menu page (no joke!) Unless I can get this straightened out, I may have to suspend photo-of-the day pleasures while I use another computer.

Simultaneously, we’re moving to our new office this week (very exciting,) and the clutch went out on my car! When it rains, it pours I suppose!

So while I may not have time to devote to a deep thought-provoking entry, I wanted to mention Monday’s state of the union address. Policy may have taken center stage that night, but I get the most joy out of the quality of speechwriting that is involved with this political address.

The experts that crafted Bush’s speech, as well as those of the Democratic and Republican rebuttals displayed a true mastery of the communication arts.

Kudos!

Congratulations to the winners of the 3rd annual Cincinnati PRSA Blacksmith awards. I'm so proud of the talented professionals we have working in this area. Some of the winners last night displayed campaigns that are truly unparalleled.
The awards were held at the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center which is a magnificent venue for events and the food was outstanding.
Kudos again to all of this year's winners, once again proving that Cincinnati is where you go to find the best PR!
Watch out, you're looking at the "rookie of the year" winner next year...or so I hope ;)

I think I've already posted this one, but thought I'd share again :)

Busted!

If you can’t recall what Enzyte is, you can surely place the campaign with happy-go-lucky Bob and his creepy smile of accomplishment…

Stick a fork in this campaign, because it’s done! Marketers of the “all natural male enhancement” supplement have been sued for unproven claims.

A product like that is perpetually doomed to appear as though praying upon the consumer’s deep seated insecurities, but unsubstantiated claims and a false ‘double your money back’ return policy breach a very sacred trust.

I cringe to think about all the money that’s gone into this campaign- in fact, just last week after the news broke, I continued to see Enzyte ads on TV. The website has yet to address the proceedings. It’ll be interesting to see what happens…

It’s a perfect reminder as to why we need to maintain high ethical standards for ourselves and most of all our clients when creating marketing material. The public isn’t very forgiving of liars- especially when it comes to such personal products.

Avoiding the Kafka Nightmare

If you’re familiar with the resounding works of Franz Kafka, you are familiar with the portrait he paints of the ‘daily grind.’ Something resembling the 1927 Fritz Lang Classic “Metropolis.” (not familiar? See clip below.)

In Kafka’s most famous work, “The Metamorphosis” our protagonist awakes to find himself having taken the form of a vermin, which he had longed to become because he so dreaded going to work in the morning.

With this in mind, I pose the question: how do we muddle through the mundane and rediscover our inspiration (if, for no other reason than to save our sanity and prevent our human forms from morphing into cockroaches)?

One of my theories is that if we make a conscious effort to enrich our lives outside of work, we’ll be more productive, well rounded and boast more personal accomplishments.

Side projects are key in helping you more accurately define your passions or explore new creative outlets. Set aside one night a week for projects or classes and you may find your worries eclipsed by some great new ideas.

Allison Brinkman, an account manager with Eisen Management Group, a mid-size Cincinnati public relations firm, credits TV talk show host David Letterman with getting her a new job.

When she graduated from college, Brinkman faced the challenge of finding her first job. Asked during a job interview what she could bring to the company, she responded with a prepared Letterman-style Top 10 list, ending with the No. 1 reason for hiring her: that "she wouldn't stop bugging him until he gave her the job."

That tenacious approach got Brinkman hired.

If you want a new job, you have to find a positive way to stand out from the other candidates. Contrary to popular belief, there is usually no one candidate who is clearly more qualified than all the rest. Everyone who gets beyond an initial screening interview can probably do the job.

Employers are too busy to waste their time interviewing unqualified candidates. What gets someone hired is that they are more likable, fit in better with the corporate culture, wow the interviewer with some particular success or simply focus more on what is important to the person making the hiring decision.

Before you can bowl over the interviewer, however, you have to get in the door. Most people miss out on great jobs because they are never even in the running for those positions. It is unlikely you are going to get your next job by posting your résumé on the Internet or searching the job boards.

Respect the Vision!

It’s a cheesy lesson, but one that we often forget. One that I’m only inclined to mention solely because it’s come to my attention several times over the past month and is applicable across the board.

I’m convinced that we are so apt to forgetting how to respect one another not only on a personal level but professional as well. In order to truly understand a concept, brand identity, client, or even employee, we must step back and observe their situation.

People will rely on someone they trust, someone that’s responsive and most of all, respects their needs, not a person who can’t see past the end of his/her own nose.

Obvious, right? You’d be surprised.

Respect someone’s vision, their opinions and their situation at the time. These are the things that make us unique and our individual contributions important.

Hectic Holidays, Wacky Weather and Relevant Resolutions

What a wonderful way to spend some time off- overindulgent eating, seeing long lost friends, and catching up on those ever present projects I’ve been putting off for so long. I even squeezed in a quick weekend in Chicago, one of my favorite cities.

Unfortunately, I seemed to bring the snow back with me, and ended up spending New Years Eve in a motel in Lafayette, Indiana.

I must confess one of my favorite parts of New Years is the best/worst list of ads. A personal favorite of mine is a Doritos ad, ‘live the flavor,’ which was actually submitted as part of a contest, which aired during the super bowl.

See it here:

It's actually inspired me to create my own viral youtube commercials this year for fun- A solid New Years Resolution that doesn't involve the usual 'joing a gym!'

One classic I feel obligated to mention is the Nike Y2K commercial directed by Spike Jonze:

What were your favorite commercials of 2007?
